William Smith's boats at the Gauging Lock at Buckby, one of the places where, when loaded, the boats would be gauged to calulate the amount of toll payable. The date is probably just prior to World War One and the dress of the crew and the decorations of the boat are typical of the period. This pair of boats, were built by William Nurser and Sons in 1904

These are Charles' measurements for Croxley, built for W. Smith in 1908. This is the earliest boat in the notebook. Charles would have been 34 at the time and still working for his elder brothers, William and Harry. The Company still traded under the name William Nurser and Sons
